MORMACPRIDE was the first cargo ship, in Moore-McCormack huge Cargo-Replacement Program. Specially designed for Moore-McCormack demands in the South-American, Baltic and Great Lakes service. The design of the Mormacpride was developed jointly for bidding purposes by Mormac and the Ingalls Shipbuilding Corporation. Designated the C-3-1624 design, it reflects the owner's requirements on Trade Routes 1, 16 and 24. The ship was constructed as as full-scantling type with a molded scantling draft of 31 ft 6 in. With the exception of the inner bottom, which is framed longitudinally, the ship is constructed on the transverse system. Seven transverse bulkheads are carried watertight to the main deck. The ship meets a one-compartment standard of subdivision. Three cargo holds are forward and two aft of the machinery space which is centered slightly abaft amidships.

The major changes to the 37a and b design was an increase in machinery from 9,000 Shp to 10,000 Shp normal, and an decrease in passenger accomodations from 12 to 4 passengers. Measurement and Cargo capacity were the same.

The design was developed by Bethlehem Steel Company's Central Technical Department. The firm of J. J. Henry Company, Inc., acted as owner's construction representative and plan-approval agent. The vessel is a single screw, turbine-propelled 10,210-dwt steamship with a raked stem and cruiser stern. (Breakbulk) MA-82 to 84 (2 Built) / Del Rio, Del Sol, Del Oro
The delivery of the SS Del Rio marks the placing in service of the first new cargo vessel under the fleet replacement program of the Mississippi Shipping Company, Inc. (Delta Line). Two additional sister vessels the Del Oro, and the Del Sol already have been launched and will be delivered during the present year. These vessels were designed by signed by Friede and Goldman, Inc., Naval Architects and Marine Engineers of New Orleans, La. The builder was Avondale Shipyards, of West-wego, La. The vessels are suitable for both trade routes served by the Delta Line, one being from the U. S. Gulf to the East Coast of South America, and the other from the U. S. Gulf to West Africa. The Del Rio is a single-crew vessel with clipper stem and crusier stern, capable of carrying dry, unitized, bulk, liquid, and refrigerated cargo. The machinery is well aft, with six holds forward, and the seventh, a special reefer hold, astern of the engine room. The after deck houses, over the machinery space, contain accommodations for the engine room personnel. The forward superstructure, between Holds 1 and 2, provide housing and amenities for the deck and stewards departments, as well as passengers, and is topped by the navigating facilities. Three continuous decks are fitted, and unusually large cargo deep-tank capacity is arranged in the more highly shaped lower hold space towards both ends of the ship.
