Concerned
about the nation's steel supply and in particular the continued flow of
iron ore from Lake Superior to the foundries, the Commission starts
negotations with Great Lakes based yards to build a series of 16 Lakers.
In the third wave of expansion, the Maritime Commission ordered ten Great
Lakes Bulk Carriers of the L6-S-B1 design. The difference to the A1 design
was the use of 3-cylinder triple expansion engines, instead of the Lentz
4-zylinder compound engines used for the A1 type. The vessel was a coal
burner with the typical look of an Laker. All vessels were delivered
between May and November 1943. Drawing shows the CADILLAC in her post WWII
configuration. |
